Friends,
I still remember carrying back the pages from Kino’s copy shop under my coat, pressed against my chest to avoid the icy Chicago rain. It was 2014 and all I could do to stay sane was make comics. These copied pages would be what I would ink on to make KITARU WITCH HUNTER, my first real deal comic in full color. It recall I had promised myself to finish this book no matter what. This needed to be my first big outing into the world of webcomics and I was like Rocky taking hit and after hit to make it happen.
My will to make this book had to be greater than the punches life dealt me. An ex told me that comics were a foolish effort and to give up on them. I had lost my relationship with my family back then as well. I was truly in the dark alone and the only way out was to make this crazy book about a lone witch hunter who always seems to make it through impossible odds and still maintains a cheerful disposition. The guy I wanted to be and hopefully many others do too.
So I sliced the edges of the paper to make them the right size with my flea market paper cutter from some dark generation of history and began inking every page. I unleashed the best I could into every panel and it was a rush, even if it killed my neck the next morning. Pop some Advil and get back to slinging ink and make this book happen.
This book taught me how to letter and how to really make a comic that entertains. It’s become a great first effort on my part and I’m really proud of the work our team did to make this book something so cool that fans are already asking if I plan to make more Kitaru. The answer is: If the response is big enough I guarantee you will see more, but this book will always be a rare special collectable as being the first full color thing I ever did. It helped level me up in comics and soon after I was working on Monster M.D.! Kitaru is what got me ready for that.
NOW LET ME TELL YOU A LITTLE MORE ABOUT KITARU
In the dark, twisted realm where shadows dance with malevolence and the supernatural intertwines with the mortal, emerges KITARU WITCH HUNTER, a gripping comic of relentless witch-hunting and bone-chilling battles. Drawing inspiration from the masterpieces of Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D, and Blade of the Immortal, Kitaru Witch Hunter is a dark symphony of violence, mystery, and unforgiving vengeance.
From the first page, the ominous atmosphere of the comic envelopes you like a suffocating fog, setting the stage for an adrenaline-fueled journey through a world teeming with mystical horrors. The protagonist, a roguish and enigmatic Witch Hunter named Kitaru, takes center stage. His steely resolve and lethal prowess are immediately reminiscent of the iconic warriors from the classics that inspired his story.
The narrative unfolds like a spellbinding tapestry, weaving a tale of witches lurking in the shadows, preying on the unsuspecting. Kitaru, armed with an arsenal of ancient weapons and a haunted past, embarks on a quest to purge the world of these malevolent creatures. The comic cleverly navigates through layers of intrigue, leaving breadcrumbs of mystery for readers to unravel with each turn of the page.
The artwork is a visceral feast for the eyes, with every panel meticulously crafted to bring the nightmarish world of Kitaru Witch Hunter to life. The illustrations pay homage to the grotesque elegance of Blade of the Immortal, the fluidity of combat reminiscent of Ninja Scroll, and the gothic undertones reminiscent of Vampire Hunter D.
Kitaru Witch Hunter is a tour de force that pays homage to the classics while carving its own bloody path through the annals of dark fantasy. It is a visceral, haunting experience that will leave readers clamoring for more, eagerly anticipating the next pulse-pounding chapter in Kitaru's relentless pursuit of justice in a world infested with witches.
